On the uncertainty of dynamic stiffness measurements

In order to assess the influence of ETICS (external thermal composite insulation composite system) on the sound insulation of walls, it is important to know the dynamic stiffness of the involved resilient material. In this work, the apparent dynamic stiffness (s’t) of a selection of often used thermal insulation materials was characterized. Results are presented of an interlaboratory measurement test performed in accordance to the standard EN 29052-1. Significant differences were found between different laboratories and different measurement techniques. Also an extensive series of 74 samples was systematically characterized by two schemes that made use of shaker and hammer excitation, respectively. From these results an analysis was made concerning the reasons underlying the found measurement uncertainties.
