Frame Multipliers - a mathematical background for time-variant filters and auditory scene analysis

The concept of frame multipliers are the mathematical description of very natural operators. Given an audio signal, a transform is applied on it, for example a time-frequency transform. The coefficients are then multiplied by a so-called symbol, and then by re-synthesis an audio signal. Multipliers have been used implicitly for quite some time in audio applications, as time-variant filters. Also in computational auditory scene analysis (CASA) the masks used to separate target and background also naturally correspond to such operators.In this talk we are going to present the mathematical theory for frame multipliers, and show how they can be applied in acoustics.
