ActiveSilence for efficient control of exhaust noise

Downsizing and downspeeding are important concepts for increasing the efficiency of combustion engines. But they are a challenge in terms of the NVH behavior of vehicles as well. In order to overcome this challenge, Eberspächer is working on the improvement of the acoustic effectiveness of exhaust systems. This article will demonstrate how active components in exhaust systems can help to resolve the conflicting objectives described. In particular with the ActiveSilence(R) technology considerable progress has been achieved over recent years in relation to performance, robustness, and cost benefit. In specific case studies it will be shown what improvements have been reached with these muffler technologies in terms of sound quality, back pressure and with regard to volume as well as weight. Finally, an outlook will be given how this technology can support the development and handling of numerous variants of exhaust lines which are common in modern vehicle platform architectures.
