Externalization in Binaural Ambisonic Auralisation of Directional Sources

Our paper deals with important perceptual qualities in a head-tracked rendering system based on: a simulated source-and-receiver-directional room impulse response (SRDRIR), head-related impulse responses (HRIRs), and a source of artificial directivity; all represented in Ambisonics.The aim of this paper is to check on a paramount ingredient of successful headphone rendering. For this purpose, we explore the extent of a comprehensive set of influence factors on externalization: head tracking, individual HRIRs, room model (and room divergence effect), and individual headphone equalisation. The results obtained show that head tracking as well as individual HRIRs are crucial for faithful reproduction. Moreover, the room divergence effect and headphone equalisation prove to be considerable aspects in the overall auralisation process.
