Vibroacoustics of Oud

Vibroacoustic behavior of oud is an untouched area in scientific research. This historical musical instrument involves many structural parts effecting its acoustics and sound quality. Oud makers have been developed their own building techniques depending on their many years experience and sense of the wood and sound quality. The body shape and volume, soundboard thickness/thickness distribution, fan-brace configurations, number and diameters of holes together with their orientations have significant effect on oud acoustics and all have potential to be explored by scientific findings. This study aims at giving insight into the vibration characteristics of oud soundboard. An oud soundboard which has traditionally seven crossing fan-braces is manufactured and measurements were performed to obtain its vibroacoustic characteristics. Resonance frequencies and mode shapes are obtained for free-free and fixed boundary conditions by experimental modal analysis technique.
